Safed musli (Chlorophytum arundinaceum, Liliaceae) is a rare herb from India. It is used in traditional systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Unani, and homeopathy. It is traditionally used for arthritis, boosting vitality, improving sexual performance, and for many other uses.
It contains steroidal saponins, sapogenins-asparagin A and B, sarsasapogenin, stigmasterol, galactoglucan, carbohydrates-starch, resin, mucilage, and proteins. Two furastanol glycosides (asparoside A and B) have been isolated from the methanol extract of the fruits. The protein content is significantly high in the root.
Steroidal saponins inhibit the growth of several pathogenic organisms in vitro. In male it is nourishing nutritive and rejuvenating, aphrodisiac tonic & helps in spermatogenesis and used to arouse sex urge. The tubers boiled in milk and sugar is used in spermatorrhoea, seminal & general debility and wasting diseases. In female it helps during pregnancy & postpartum, nourishing foetus and increasing breast milk flow (Galactagogue). The powder of tubers, due to its cooling, demulcent, and antacid properties, used in diarrhoea, dysentery, dyspepsia and hyper acidity. Tubers are powdered and mixed with 'jeera' (Cumin seed) and sugar and taken with water or milk to treat stomach ailments.
